Milan’s Snai San Siro Racecourse opened in 1925 and was later declared a “monument of national interest,” the only racecourse in the world to have this distinction. However, the history of horse racing, and of flat racing in particular, dates back to the early 19th century. The first flat races held in Milan date back to 1807. They were improvised in the open countryside, in an area that is now almost the city center, on today’s Corso Buenos Aires. The turning point came in 1885, when the Lombard Horse Racing Society, originally based in Senago, decided to build a racecourse near Milan, outside Porta Magenta, in San Siro. San Siro Racecourse opened on May 10, 1888, and horse racing became increasingly important in Milanese social life.
