The first idea for a shopping arcade connecting Piazza Duomo with Piazza della Scala is attributed to patriot and writer Carlo Cattaneo in 1839, but it was not until 1860, after obtaining the necessary expropriation permits, that the city council could announce a competition to build it. With no set requirements, a huge number of designs were submitted, but none was selected. The city council had already decided in the first competition to dedicate the Galleria to King Vittorio Emanuele II, and it was the king himself who laid the first stone on March 7, 1865, in the presence of numerous dignitaries, including the then mayor of Milan, Antonio Beretta. The Galleria earned the nickname “drawing room of Milan” and became the center of the city’s bourgeois social life, attracting people to its elegant new shops, but above all to its restaurants and cafés. Some, such as Caffè Camparino and Caffè Biffi, are still open today. Under the municipal regulations, which are still in force, all businesses inside the Galleria must have gold lettering on a black background.
