This body of water has always fascinated us because it is so deep, far deeper than the sea where we live, yet enclosed within a spectacular mountain landscape. The lake lies in a basin surrounded by forested mountains and offers scenery of great variety and fragrance. Along its shores, pastures, woods, rugged, imposing rocks, picturesque villages overlooking the water, and beautiful villas with parks and gardens alternate. The Centro Lago, where the three branches meet, is the mildest point and offers the broadest panorama. We loved reaching this waterway crossroads by boat to enjoy the best view of the entire Bellagio promontory, the northern Grigna overlooking Valsassina and, on clear days, the upper basin with the Alpine range in the background. The most familiar and beloved area has always been the Lecco branch, with its wilder, more evocative scenery, the southern Grigna, of Dolomitic origin, and the Corni di Canzo, which descend toward the lake, forming enchanting coves and inlets. Our favorite refuge was the \u003cstrong\u003eFiumelatte spring\u003c\/strong\u003e, described by Leonardo da Vinci. This stream had intrigued Leonardo da Vinci and enchanted us children with its one-of-a-kind feature: water flows through it at regular intervals from March 25 until October 7. The water gushes out of a mysterious cave rich in scents that would be impossible, and reductive, to put into words. A place where the perfumer’s alchemy came to life before anywhere else. The cave rock itself was fragrant.
