This journey begins in one of the most incredible and mysterious places Italy has to offer—or perhaps it would be more accurate to say, hides: Matera, known as the City of the Sassi for the unique character of its historic center. Carved into and built along the edge of the Gravina di Matera, a deep ravine that divides the area in two, the Sassi of Matera—the neighborhoods that make up the ancient part of the city—stretch across two small valleys facing east, lying slightly below the surrounding land and separated by the rocky spur of the Civita. Of all the places we have visited, this is perhaps the one that most resembles the inhabited Moon we dreamed of exploring as children. This perfume extract captures a dream we have all cherished at least once in our lives: living on the Moon. Sheltered in cave dwellings carved by hand into the hard rock hundreds of years ago, warmed by the welcoming hearth and lively fireplace, this fragrance is born—strong and rugged in character, like the stone that lives in this hidden land! Through a small window overlooking the valley, an enormous red moon appears. Seen through the skylight, the perspective made it seem within arm’s reach. Opening the window, palm facing upward, you could almost believe you could hold up the inscrutable satellite. This moving experience inspired a perfume extract as dark in character as the phenomenon just described. At first encounter, it seems almost coy and lighthearted, but a moment later it captivates you forever. Its fragrant notes linger for days after it has been worn. Like the City of the Sassi, it remains hidden, then emerges in all its beauty when you least expect it. Even today, this creation amazes us, because it brings a new emotion every time.
